Are Squidoo Lenses for Sale Again?
Well they are if you are “Paul Edmondson” creator of HubPages, and “Seth Godin” has talked you into buying Squidoo. – One Writers conjecture on what may have happened.
For anyone who hasn’t heard, or is out of the Squidoo/HubPages loop. According to a recent announcement from Squidoo. – Squidoo.com is kaput!
Here is Godin’s typical, this is a great move for the masses speech, (Godin’s Farewell Letter)and here is Edmondson’s gracious acceptance of the floundering site (Edmondson’s Acceptance Post). Squidoo took a big Google slap a couple of years ago, and could not find the recipe for bringing back “The Love of G”. HubPages went through a similar phase, but you wouldn’t really know it today, they seem to be thriving.
So, it seems that all Squidoo content that is transferred over to HubPages, will be initially kept in a separate class of new user names. Even if a Squid Lensmaster has an existing account, they will not be able to simply transfer it over. I’m sure there is much more to it, but my guess is one of the primary reasons for this is so that in the event of buyers remorse, Edmondson would be able to simply cut the cord, and dump the Squidoodoo.
Regardless of how this unfolds, it seems there is a solid plan in place, which would lead me to believe that HubPages must be running the show. Most of the Squidoo initiatives over the past year have been poorly planned, and similarly executed. The demise of Squidoo, may very well end up being the best roll out of any initiative in their current history.
I spend most of my time managing my own web properties now, but have maintained a Giant Lensmaster Status, even through their down years. Yes, I’m a sentimental fool. But that’s all over now, and I’ll have to decide if I want to pursue a relationship with HubPages. – Calamari anyone?
