A Mechanical Turk Review
There are a few sites online where writers can go and know for sure that they will make some money. Some of these sites pay less than top dollar, but they do have their perks, if only to be filler work when things get slim. One of those sites is Mechanical Turk.
If you want to get started writing online and actually get paid to write online, Mechanical Turk is a good place to start just because payment is assured and you can always find something to do on there. In fact, this is a great place to meet clients and develop ongoing business relationships with them.
Mechanical Turk is one of the first places I started writing online for pay. I really had no idea where to go, so I scoured the Web and ended up at Mechanical Turk. Since then I have gained enough experience and developed enough of a network to have multiple sources of income, but I always keep places like Mechanical Turk in the back of my mind because you never know when it is going to be a slow week with other clients.
Mechanical Turk is an Amazon site and as such, you get paid through your Amazon account. For those just getting started, this means that you have to actually create an Amazon account, but don’t worry, you don’t have to spend your money on Amazon if you don’t want to. Instead you can just have your payments transferred to your bank account or where ever it is that you want them transferred to, though you may experience a “hold” in the beginning.
The system was a bit difficult for me to understand in the beginning because you sometimes have to jump through hoops to write for a company. They may have a test you have to take or some other series of tasks that you need to do in order to be eligible to write for particular companies. It was difficult to me because I was fairly new to the Internet in general. For people who have been using the Internet for years, navigating the certification process is a breeze and not all clients even require it.
The first thing I noticed was that many of the jobs offer very low pay. In fact, I thought some of the rates were downright pitiful. Then I realized that some of those jobs only took seconds to complete and I could do as many of them as I wanted to. That pitiful change quickly added up, but it was not really the money that was my biggest benefit from working on Mechanical Turk; it was the experience of learning what it was that some clients were looking for. Writing online is nothing at all like writing for print and in order to succeed as a writer who published online, there were various elements of that difference that I needed to come to terms with. Mechanical Turk offered the perfect situation for that because I could filter the windows to pick and choose the jobs I wanted. That means I got to focus on areas that I needed to in order to develop a better understanding of how the Internet works.
Part of the payment process requires you to register a bank account if you want to have funds transferred to that account. Amazon will send two small deposits to your account in order to verify it. You will then login to Amazon and enter the amount of the deposits that Amazon made to your account. If you are in a hurry to get your funds, you can also choose to give Amazon your login information for your bank account. The whole process is utterly painless and is pretty run of the mill for the way that most payment sites function when you want to transfer money to your bank. Personally, I was not in a hurry to get my funds so I just waited for the deposits. I imagine the alternate route goes much faster.
When I started with Mechanical Turk, you had to have a minimum balance of $10 in order to have the money sent to your bank account. Today you only need $1 in order to have the money transferred. One of the advantages of going through Mechanical Turk and therefore Amazon is that you can actually use your money right away just as long as you are shopping where you can make payments using your Amazon.com account. As I said, this is not the most lucrative site to write for but you can always find something to do on there and you don’t have to worry about clients not paying you for work they have approved because they have prepaid Amazon for the work already.
