Squidoo is an online publishing platform and community that allows you to write professional looking web pages on just about any topic. An added benefit to writing articles (known as lenses) at Squidoo is that any advertising or affiliate profits that your page may generate gets shared with you, or a charity of your choice. You are also within reason, allowed to add your own affiliate product links to your Squidoo lenses. Read the Squidoo TOS.
Note: As I write this, Squidoo is about six months into some very major changes that were prompted by the Googles Penguin and Panda updates. Squidoo was peaking in December of “2012” spawned by millions of pages of content written by tens of thousands of authors.
Unfortunately there was large subcomponent of writers that climbed aboard the Squidoo gravy train and inundated the site with hundreds of thousands of pages of sub-par material before Squidoo management could appropriately respond. Squidoo is far from its heyday, but the staff is working diligently to turning it around and the site is showing signs of a rebound.
Who should write on Squidoo? – Anyone who has something to share. If you have ever owned a product that you are so happy with, that you feel as if you could write an article about it, then Squidoo might be your platform. If you have ever designed or created a unique craft project and you want to share with the world, Squidoo is a place to do that. Did you plan the vacation of a lifetime to a faraway place? Would like to document your trip and photo’s for all to see? Then write about it on Squidoo.
How much money can I make at Squidoo? – When Squidoo was at its peak there were many authors making several hundreds of dollars a month and some that were taking in even more. A handful of writers are still doing quite well, but the consensus is that since the Penguin and Panda updates overall sales are down. Just like everyone else I had done quite well in the final quarter of “2012”, currently my account of about 80 lenses still nets me $100-$200 monthly between Squidoo ranking bonuses and affiliate sales.
The quantity of lenses that you craft has no direct correlation to how much revenue you can generate. Each lens stands on its own merits. Quality SEO, and choosing keyword titles and topics that will entice Google to offer you a high page ranking is the main component for generating volume traffic. Most Squidoo authors will tell you that the bulk of their Squidoo income generally comes from a small percentage of the lenses they write.
Over the past several months the Squidoo management team and Squidoo’s founder Seth Godin have made it clear to writers that want to participate on the Squidoo site that although you may still enjoy revenue sharing for you or your charity, making money should not be the primary reason why you should write on squidoo.
Yes you can still make money on Squidoo. – However it’s not an income that you will build overnight. It takes time for the lenses you write to get indexed on Google. And Google is the primary traffic source for Squidoo lenses. If you are looking for a good venue to get your tentacles wet, Squidoo is a great place to start your online writing career.
